Understanding Relationship Challenges

Relationship difficulties don't only show up between romantic partners. The same patterns, criticism, defensiveness, shutting down, difficulty repairing after conflict, can strain a friendship, a relationship with a parent, or a dynamic at work just as much as a marriage. Much of the research on repairing relationships comes from couples work, but the underlying patterns are the same across almost any close relationship.

Whether you're working through this in individual sessions or with someone else in the room, I'll help you understand what's driving the conflict and build healthier ways to communicate and reconnect.

How do you know if
this is you?

Relationship strain can show up in a lot of different connections. Some signs worth paying attention to:

  • The same argument or tension resurfacing, no matter who it's with

  • Feeling unheard or dismissed by someone close to you

  • Avoiding a person or a topic instead of addressing it directly

  • Trouble setting boundaries with family, friends, or a partner

  • A relationship that feels harder to repair than it used to

This isn't only about romantic relationships. If a dynamic with your mother, a close friend, or a coworker keeps weighing on you, that counts too.

How Therapy Can Help

Whether we're working on this one on one or with the other person present, my approach focuses on understanding the pattern underneath the conflict, not just the latest argument. I draw on structured, research-backed approaches to communication and repair, adapted to whichever relationship you're navigating, romantic, family, or otherwise.

What Progress Looks Like

Progress often looks like recognizing a pattern before you're in the middle of it, communicating more directly instead of avoiding or shutting down, and feeling less exhausted by a relationship that used to drain you. Sometimes that means the relationship itself changes. Sometimes it means how you show up in it does.

There's no single formula here. We'll work with whatever relationship is actually weighing on you.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone
